APHA

The scientific activities of the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) focus on safeguarding animal and plant health for the benefit of people, the environment and the economy.

APHA excels in biological threat surveillance and risk assessment as well as in conducting emergency response against a variety of animal and plant pathogens, and invasive species, of global concerns. The agency takes an integrated approach to health, drawing from its unparalleled ability to conduct cutting-edge research from population systems to molecular systems under one roof.

APHA: Safeguarding with Science

We have extensive experience in influencing policy and raising awareness, promoting One Health through joint actions on foodborne zoonoses, antimicrobial resistance and emerging microbiological hazards across Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

Over the last decade, APHA has worked with a large variety of international stakeholders, assembling innovative networks among researchers and policy-makers from all continents. It routinely delivers world leading technical assistance on vaccine development and efficacy, on building strong veterinary infrastructures, on inspection and certification as well as biosecurity.

Our expertise is in high demand and valued by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and World Health Organisation (WHO), as demonstrated by their designation of UK facilities as International Reference Laboratories, International Collaborating Centres and International Centres of Excellence.
